Every tattoo and cosmetic tattoo responds differently. We assess the area, pigment and your skin during consultation so we can explain what is realistic before treatment begins.

Tattoo removal treatment at The Laser & Skin Clinic Essex

Tattoo removal or fading for a cover-up

You may be working towards complete removal or simply need enough fading for a new design. We can discuss both goals and create a treatment plan based on your tattoo’s size, colours, ink depth and how your skin responds.

Consultation-led treatment

A consultation and patch test are required before your first treatment. We will discuss the process, likely spacing between sessions, aftercare and the difference between fading and complete removal.

Cosmetic pigment needs a tailored approach

Permanent makeup pigments can behave differently from traditional tattoo ink. Eyebrows, eyeliner and lip blush removal are assessed carefully during consultation, with treatment settings selected for the pigment and area being treated.

Before & After Tattoo Removal

Follow the guidance below to help your skin heal well. Your practitioner will also give you personalised dressing and skincare instructions at your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

  • A consultation and patch test are required before your first treatment.
  • Avoid sunbeds, sunbathing and fake tan on the area being treated. Please tell us if you have a recent tan or sunburn.
  • Arrive with the area clean and free from make-up, creams and oils.
  • If there is hair over the tattoo, please shave it before your appointment.
  • Let us know about any new medication, skin irritation or changes to your health since your consultation.

After Your Appointment

  • The area may look white or “frosted” immediately after treatment. Redness, swelling and tenderness can follow. Blistering or scabbing may also occur as the skin heals.
  • Follow the dressing and skincare instructions given to you at your appointment. Keep the area clean and handle it gently.
  • Do not pop blisters or pick scabs. This increases the risk of infection and scarring.
  • Avoid exfoliating, fragranced products and rubbing the treated area.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the first couple of days. Do not swim or use a sauna until the skin has healed.
  • Keep the area out of direct sunlight and avoid sunbeds. Once the skin has healed, protect exposed skin with a high-factor SPF between sessions.
  • Contact the clinic if you are concerned about healing, or if redness or pain is getting worse.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Tattoo removal takes time. The number of sessions depends on the tattoo’s size, colours, ink depth and how your skin responds. Treatments are spaced apart to allow your skin to heal and the tattoo to fade. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed, but we can discuss what is realistic for your tattoo at your consultation.

Questions clients ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

The sensation is often compared to an elastic band flicking against the skin or the feeling of getting the tattoo originally. We use cooling methods to help make the process as comfortable as possible.

Can all colours be removed?

Our Q-Switched Nd:YAG system is highly effective on most common ink colours, particularly dark inks like black and dark blue. Certain colours like bright greens and yellows can be more challenging and may require more sessions.

Will it leave a scar?

When the correct aftercare is followed, the risk of scarring is minimal. The laser is designed to target the ink, not the surrounding tissue. It is essential not to pick or scratch any scabs that form during the healing process.
